Finding betting edges in these two NBA openers

The NBA has returned and there’s plenty to handicap. Two games in particular this weekend have lots of intrigue with line moves, additions to lineups and matchup problems that will surely work against certain teams. In some cases, it might lead to value for bettors to pounce on.

Friday: Memphis Grizzlies vs. Portland Trail Blazers (-2, 222¹/₂ total)

This could be by far the most meaningful game in the first three days in the bubble. By means of winning percentage, Portland has an edge in the standings over New Orleans and Sacramento in the race for the final seed in the Western Conference. The Trail Blazers sit 3¹/₂ games behind Memphis in the West, and a win would go a long way toward forcing a play-in with the Grizzlies.

However, this matchup is fascinating for many reasons bes...

MLB underdog betting lessons can be applied on court and ice

LAS VEGAS — Last weekend was a nice appetizer for sports bettors with the start of the pandemic-shortened MLB season, but we’ll be gorging ourselves this weekend on an all-you-can-bet buffet of sports as the NBA and NHL restart their 2019-20 campaigns.

From all reports, it appears the “winter sports” (which are used to being confined indoors) have done a better job with their “bubble” approach in Orlando for the NBA and Toronto and Edmonton for the NHL (and the WNBA’s “wubble” in Bradenton, Fla.) than the open-door policy of MLB. But despite the things MLB has done wrong, bettors still can learn from what happened in its opening week.

For starters, home-field advantage doesn’t matter as much without fans in the stands...

Trevor Hughes spent last week in Portland, Oregon, covering the growing unrest. He joined reporter Lindsay Schnell, who grew up near Portland and has been based there for the past nine years, to cover the protests.

I wanted to hear from both of them. I had questions.

What don’t we see? What don’t we hear enough about?

“The thing to bear in mind is that, especially for this most immediate period of time, the protest is only immediately surrounding the federal courthouse,” Hughes said...
